Information about Grays Harbor County

Grays Harbor was formerly called Chehalis County. Chehalis County was formed April 15, 1854 out of Thurston County. Chehalis is an Indian word meaning "shifting sand." Chehalis County was renamed Grays Harbor on June 9, 1915, in honor of Captain Robert Gray. The county seat is Montesano.
