Information about Kittitas County
The area that is now Kittitas County was formerly part of Ferguson County. Ferguson County is the present day location of Kittatas and Yakima counties. Ferguson was established on January 23, 1863. Ferguson County became Yakima County on January 21, 1865. Kittitas County was established on November 24, 1883, out of part of Yakima County. It is named after the Native American word, Kittitas, meaning "gray gravel bank" or "plenty food." The county seat is Ellensburg.
