Check Out Washington is a collaboration between the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission and the Washington State Library.

What is Check Out Washington?

Patrons of most public libraries in Washington can access state lands through the Check Out Washington Program.

Library card holders can check out a limited-edition special Discover Pass. The library Discover Pass allows borrowers access to millions of acres of state parks and other state public recreation lands.

Washington State Parks offers this program in partnership with the Washington State Library, the Washington departments of Fish and Wildlife and Natural Resources. The Washington State Parks Foundation provided initial funding to help launch the program.

Background

The original pilot program started in spring 2019 with four library systems. By 2020, the program expanded to nearly 200 libraries. In 2021, funding from the Legislature afforded two special Discover Passes to any library outlet that requested them, expanding Check Out Washington across the state.
