Process
- Apply for the ALSC National Institute Professional Development Grant at this link. Applications are due no later than 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 13th, 2024.
- Wait to receive notification of whether or not you have been selected to receive a grant. All applicants will be notified by end of day on Monday, May 20th, 2024.
- Receive a grant award letter from WSL. This letter is sent to the awardee and contracting authority.
- Register for the conference. Awardees can register as soon as they receive their grant award letter, but WSL will only pay up to the Early Bird non-member rate (registration deadline 7/2), and any pre-conferences you choose to attend.
- Arrange and pay for travel and hotel as detailed in the allowable costs section of the LibGuide.
- Attend the ALSC National Institute in Denver, CO on September 19-21.
- Prepare a report/ presentation of what you learned, and be prepared to share at the October or November YS3C meeting.
- Complete a ALSC National Institute Professional Development Grant Report. (Visual report not required)
- Submit a claim form with proof of payment documentation (receipts, check stubs, invoices with $0 balances, or other evidence that a payment was made). WSL can only make payments to the library, so participants who personally paid for part or all of the expenses will need to be reimbursed by their library.

What is the ALSC National Institute Professional Development Grant?
Washington State Library (WSL) is offering a competitive grant open to public and tribal library staff in Washington State. A limited number of recipients will be selected to receive a grant for up to $2,400 in allowable costs (see below) to attend the 2024 ALSC National Institute in Denver, CO.
Applications will be reviewed and scored against the following demonstrated criteria: Financial and professional development need, community/patron impact, and plans for sharing the knowledge gained at the conference. WSL may also use geographic and demographic data in the decision making process.
Each individual should submit a separate application, even if multiple staff people from the same system are applying to attend. Each recipient is responsible for completing the required reports.

Allowable Costs
Allowable Costs Include:
- Airfare to and from Denver, CO
- Ground transportation (mileage, taxi/ride share, parking costs)
- Early Bird Conference Registration (deadline: 7/2/2024)
- Pre-Conference Registration
- Conference Hotel (If you stay at the conference hotel, WSL can reimburse the $219 per night rate plus tax. If something prohibits you from staying at the conference hotel, please let us know so we can work out alternative details.)
If you are selected to receive a grant, the Washington State Library can reimburse up to $2,400 total for the above allowable costs. Any costs above the $2,400 will need to be paid for by the grant recipient or their place of employment.
$1,000 of the grant will count toward your personal maximum of $1,000 and your library's maximum yearly Professional Development grant limit of $6,000 for FY2025.
