This session is to support librarians and library staff in understanding what it means to be an ally to youth who identify within the LGBTQ+ community. This session will begin with diving into general information and vocabulary within the LGBTQ+ community. We will go over the data and trends we are currently seeing among LGBTQ+ youth and then discuss specific examples and ways to support LGBTQ+ youth through a trauma informed and culturally responsive lens. All individuals participating in this webinar will walk away with strategies and resources to successfully support this population of youth.

 Session Objectives:

  •  Participants will analyze data from the most recent research on LGBTQ+ youth in our country to gain an understanding of unique experiences and challenges within the community.
  • Participants will gain an understanding of what trauma-informed and responsive supports look like and specific interventions to increase inclusivity within the library system
  • Participants will learn specific communication skills and support to work with LGBTQ+ youth that are trauma informed and responsive.
