Washington State Library Circulating STEAM Kits
Supported by funding provided by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the Library Services and Technology Act, through the Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
This kit introduces students to self-publishing and DIY culture using zines as a medium. Zines can explore any topic and any genre, and students are encouraged to be creative with content, layout, and format. The tools and supplies provided in this kit would work well with cross-curricular projects and activities for older teens and adults. If interested, students can submit their finished zines as entries in the 11th Annual Washington State Zine Contest. The deadline for submissions is March 27, 2026.
The kit includes:
A longarm stapler
Books with reproducible images
NOTE: Some images may show nude figures.
Markers, pens, and pencils
Glue sticks
Scissors
Washi tape
Bone folders
Rubber stamps and stamp pads
Binder of instructions and list of materials
Shipping container
Kits will stay at a library for three weeks, then they must be sent to the next location.
If you are hoping to send this kit between locations in your district using internal mail and need it for more than three weeks, please email STEAM@sos.wa.gov, and we will see if we can accommodate your booking.
