Newspapers of Washington State

What is a Legal Newspaper?

A legal newspaper, also known as a paper of record, is a newspaper that publishes legal notices. The State of Washington defines a legal newspaper in RCW 65.16.020. A legal newspaper is approved by an order of the superior court of the county in which the newspaper is published, as described in RCW 65.16.040. A newspaper can have its designation as a legal newspaper revoked through the process outlined in RCW 65.16.050.

To read the entire RCW on legal publications see RCW 65.16.

How Do I Find the Legal Newspaper for a County?

A list of newspapers approved as legal newspapers, in compliance with RCW 65.16.070, is posted in the office of the County Clerk of the Superior Court and will only include newspapers for that specific county. Sometimes, this list can also be found on the County Clerk of the Superior Court's website. Additionally, the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association (WNPA) has a website for public notices.
