WSL | Federal Library Funding in Washington

Federal funds are provided through the Institute of Museum of Library Services (IMLS) in support of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Grants to States Program.

Digitized Heritage Materials

Historical newspapers and local materials from around Washington have been digitized and hosted online.

 

What does this cost?

  • Over 1 million pages from more than 100 historical Washington newspapers are available.
  • Federal funds cover the $125,000/year for the administration of the digitization project as well as the consulting to communities and publishers across the state to guide preservation and access to their valuable local historical histories.
  • Federal funds also cover more than $30,000/year for storage and accessibility to the digitized newspapers through DL Consulting’s Veridian platform.
  • Over 1 million records are available through the Northwest hub for the Digital Public Library of American (DPLA) platform from more than 300 contributors.
    • Project built and maintained in cooperation with the State Library of Oregon and the Oregon Historical Society, who are also utilizing federal funds.
    • Federal funds cover $125,000 for the administration, ingestion, and outreach of this program.
  • For more than 15 years, WSL has administered annual grants to libraries for local digitization projects to preserve and provide access to valuable artifacts of historical significance, especially from rural areas throughout the state.
    • The Washington Digital Heritage site has over 38,000 digitized artifacts from around the state.
    • Federal funds cover $90,000 for the administration of the grant program as well as the contract and management of the hosting platform. Federal funds cover the cost of the platform at $26,000/year.
